Great Lakes Rodeo

At the Marquette County Fairgrounds

Thanks for your support
of the
U.P. Riders 4-H Club and
the Great Lakes Rodeo

Fri.-Sun., May 28th-30th

We were able to raise enough funds from the weekend to: send 15 UP Riders to 4-H Camp, provide $66 scholarships to 11 UP Riders attending the MSU Exploration Days, and contribute significantly towards the travel expenses for the Senior Horse Bowl team heading to Eastern National's this November.

Competition Details

The U. P. Cowboy competition is designed as an original contest
to challenge the versatility of both
horse and rider

This will be accomplished in 3 parts

  1. In-hand
  2. UPHA Double Points Horse Show
  3. Trail Ride at the 3 age levels recognized by the UPHA
Juvenile (3–13), Junior (14–25) and Senior (26 and over)

Competition requirements may
differ based upon age level

Each horse/rider combination
will be judged separately

  1. In-Hand ($10 to enter) – The horse and rider will have to complete an in-hand obstacle course inside an arena setting. Possible obstacles might include logs, cones, gates and trailering. There will be 5 obstacles, each worth 5 points.
  2. UPHA Double Points Horse Show– Riders must compete in each of the 3 sections provided: Halter, Performance and Speed. Each rider must enter at least 5 classes. (Ex: 1. Color Halter, 2. Showmanship 26 and over, 3. Western Pleasure 26 and over, 4. Scuda Hole, 5. Pole Bending 26 and over.) The rider in this example has fulfilled their requirement of competing in all 3 sections of the Horse Show.
You may enter more than the required 5 classes, at which point your top 5 earning classes will be applied to your final total. Points will be earned by placings with 1st place = 5 points, 2nd place = 4 points…and so on. If the rider doesn’t place in the top 5 in any class, they will still meet the competition requirement but with no points earned in that class or classes.
This portion of the event is a UPHA-sanctioned show with points earned counting toward your end-of-year and versatility award points. You DO NOT have to compete in the other 2 sections of the weekend in order to compete in the Horse Show.
  3. Trail Ride Competition ($10 to enter) – Riders will start staggered on a pre-designated trail ride. Each rider will have 5 judged obstacles to maneuver. Each obstacle will be given a possible score of 5 points. Speed is not a factor. Juvenile riders may be accompanied by an adult on foot for the entire length of the trail ride.

A possible 75 points can be achieved by each horse/rider combination

Winners will be presented a belt buckle signifying their recognition as
“U.P. Cowboy 2010”

Tie breakers will be pre-determined and resolved by the official scorekeeper
